mortality is dependent on the presence of co-morbid conditions e.g. age, co-existent renal or cardiac disease and immunosuppression
mortality rates range between 5 and 15%
note though that polyarticular septic arthritis due to staphylococcal aureus or in the presence of rheumatoid arthritis has an extremely poor prognosis with figures as high as 50% in some studies
