Patients in respiratory distress due to airways obstruction will often use the accessory muscles of respiration.

The patient braces the shoulder girdle by resting forward on straight arms.

The accessory muscles are:

  • sternocleidomastoid
  • platysma
  • strap muscles of the neck

Abdominal muscles may also be used.
