There are some problems with ATRA therapy:

  • the remission is short-lived and ATRA does not work the second time (inducible cytoplasmic molecules mop it up)

  • 25% of patients develop the ATRA syndrome

  • side-effects, although trivial when compared to those of cytotoxic therapy, are numerous
