Criteria for admission/referral

Authoring team

Admit immediately if:

  • systemically unwell
  • pain is severe
  • uncertainty as to diagnosis
  • when surgical emergency cannot be excluded
  • in clinically severe disease
  • in tubo-ovarian abscess
  • PID in pregnancy

Hospital admission should be considered

  • lack of response to oral therapy
  • intolerance to oral therapy

Refer if:

  • difficulty obtaining suitable specimens
  • a partner might need tracing, investigating or treating (GUM)

Inpatient therapy of PID patients mainly through IV route which is continued until 24 hours after clinical improvement and followed by oral therapy (1)
