Orchidectomy is the surgical removal of the testes.
It is indicated for tumours of the testes, where it can be part of the diagnostic process.
Subcapsular orchidectomy is used as a treatment for prostatic cancer, where it may be considered a form of hormonal manipulation. Both testes are removed, but the testicular capsules are left in-situ and fill with blood clot which preserves the scrotal contour.
