These are folds of skin and subcutaneous fat which are derived anteriorly from the mons pubis and are contiguous posteriorly with the perineum. They are joined posteriorly by the fourchette.
The skin bears sweat glands, apocrine glands, sebaceous glands and, on their lateral aspects, pubic hairs.
The fibres of the round ligament terminate in the labia majora.
