Rarer causes of hyperprolactinaemia include:

  • primary thyroid failure:
    • thyrotrophin releasing hormone - TRH - also stimulates prolactin release

  • ectopic prolactin production:
    • a bronchial carcinoma may produce prolactin

  • acute or chronic renal failure:
    • due to delayed clearance of prolactin

  • acromegaly:
    • 30% of cases have hyperprolactinaemia and galactorrhoea

  • empty sella syndrome
