It has been possible to analyse the incidence of previous breast cancer as a risk factor for future, entirely new carcinomas by following patients who have had a partial mastectomy. There is an overall increased risk of about 1% per year of a new carcinoma. The risk is greatest in those with a diagnosis at a young age - before 40 years.
