Lumbar puncture provides access to cerebrospinal fluid for the purposes of diagnosis or treatment. It is particularly used in the initial management of suspected meningitis and subarachnoid haemorrhage, and as a diagnostic indicator in multiple sclerosis.

LP must not be performed in the presence of raised intracranial pressure which, if suspected, mandates prior CT scan.
