Optic atrophy is the result of progressive optic nerve disease. Damage to the ganglion cells and their axons is permanent. Axon loss reorients the astrocytes within the optic disc, so obscuring the capillaries on the surface and producing the characteristic pallor of atrophy.

Treatment is dependent on the cause.
