Doxapram hydrochloride is a respiratory stimulant used in situations of ventilatory failure when artificial ventilation is contraindicated.

It should only be given under expert supervision.

It is a drug with some serious side effects, including epilepsy and hepatic impairment.

It should not be given where there is severe hypertension, status asthmaticus, coronary artery disease or thyrotoxicosis.
