Malignant melanoma must be excised and processed in a systematic manner if histological changes are to be correctly interpreted. The specimen is excised and fixed whole before being embedded. Then, transverse sections are taken at intervals of about 3mm. These should be perpendicular to the long-axis of the specimen.
