Herniation describes the act of protrusion of a tissue, viscus or organ out of the body cavity in which it normally resides. The protruded part is the hernia.
Abdominal herniae are the most frequently encountered in surgery. Cerebral herniation is a rare but life-threatening occurrence.
Herniation must be contrasted with eventration.
