Aetiology of pendular nystagmus

The defect is thought to lie in the gaze-holding smooth pursuit mechanisms.

Conditions which result in loss of central vision early in life are the commonest cause of pendular nystagmus:

  • albinism
  • B12 deficiency
  • multiple sclerosis

Pendular nystagmus may be congenital.
