Laron type dwarfism is an autosomal recessive condition which is the result of resistance to growth hormone.
There is a proportionate dwarfism, which is due to epiphyseal growth plate retardation.
Clinically they act as if they have no growth hormone, but on investigation they have plenty of biologically active growth hormone. However, levels of insulin-like growth factors are low, as are growth hormone dependent binding factors.
There is a mild delay in bone age.
Treatment involves the use of recombinant insulin-like growth factor I.
