Nucleosomes

Nucleosomes are the structure formed when the DNA double helix winds around a core of histone basic protein. Approximately 146 base pairs are required for each nucleosome unit. Further association of thousands of individual nucleosomes in series along the same length of DNA results in the next level of structure, chromatin.

Electron microscopy reveals the nucleosomes as discrete particles joined to each other by a short length of double helix.
