This is inflammation of the pleura.

Patients present with pleuritic chest pain, often with a pleural rub, but without a pleural effusion.

In some cases the pleura remains 'dry' ie there is no subsequent accumulation of pleural fluid. However some causes subsequently develop a pleural effusion.
