The first thoracic vertebra shares features of the superior cervical vertebrae:

  • triangular vertebral foramen
  • body:
    • oval and broadest in coronal plane
    • has posterolateral lipping of superior body surface - the uncus
    • single oval costal facets at upper margin of posterolateral junctions with pedicles
  • spinous process horizontal and projects posteriorly
  • superior and inferior articular processes are more horizontal than those of inferior vertebrae
