Sclerosing peritonitis is a rare complication of ventricular peritoneal shunts where the CSF results in an inflammatory process in the peritoneum. There may be a generalised peritonitis with abdominal distension.
Interpretation of anaylsis of fluid from paracentesis may be difficult because of the mixture of CSF and ascites.
Treatment is by conversion to a ventricular atrial shunt.
