A biliary fistula is an established and abnormal communication between any portion of the biliary tree and some other area. The fistula may communicate with the exterior or with an internal cavity.

Biliary fistulae are commonly caused by:

  • trauma and surgery
  • gallstones
  • peptic ulcers
  • neoplasia
