A wisdom tooth is a third molar tooth which causes pain from infection around the partially or completely unerupted crown of the tooth (pericoronitis).
All four wisdom teeth are often removed together under general anaesthethic once one tooth has started to give trouble. Pain and bruising can be significant requiring analgesia for up to a week post-operatively.
See dental emergencies for complications.
