This is a biphosphonate that is used in the treatment of Paget's disease of the bone. The drug reduces the increased rate of bone turnover associated with the disease by being absorbed onto hydroxyapatite crystals and slowing both their rate of growth and their rate of dissolution.
Etidronate is also prescribed with calcium as cyclic etidronate for the treatment of osteoporosis
