Tuberculous arthritis is now a very rare condition in Europe but may occasionally present in the spine and the larger synovial joints such as the hip and knee.

Infection is by either haematogenous spread - from the lungs or intestines - or local spread from a tuberculous focus in a neighbouring bone.
