The incubation period of this disease is highly variable - from two to 26 days - with an average of approximately 10 days.

The disease occurs in two phases:

  • a leptospiraemic or septicaemic phase lasting up to a week
  • an immune phase which follows the leptospiraemic phase, generally after an asymptomatic period of 2-3 days
