Motives

Last reviewed dd mmm yyyy. Last edited dd mmm yyyy

Authoring team

Reasons include:

  • seeking immediate relief from a situation that is seen as intolerable
  • trying to secure the attention of others after another means has failed to do so
  • as a hostile act to make others feel guilty or anxious
  • to test the benevolence of fate (or God)
  • to die

Often the intentions are multiple, mixed up and unclear.

Over half of DSH episodes occur under the influence of alcohol.

Whatever the motivation, DSH should be taken seriously.
