A partial gastrectomy is used:

  • where medical management of a gastric, duodenal or stomal ulcers has failed
  • to prevent ulcer recurrence
  • to prevent ulcer complications
  • to treat simple tumours of the stomach which are likely to bleed or have malignant potential
  • rarely, to treat gastric strangulation, volvulus or infection

For the aim of stopping ulceration, a partial gastrectomy can:

  • remove an ulcer, or
  • remove a gastrin-secreting mucosa

A Bilroth I type of partial gastrectomy is the standard type of operation for a chronic gastric ulcer. The Polya-type is reserved for duodenal ulceration.
