The pathogenesis of prostatic carcinoma is uncertain.

Factors implicated include:

  • advancing age
  • race - rare in people of east Asian descent, common among black people
  • environment - Japanese migrants to USA acquire an increased incidence of the disease
  • hormonal - androgens may have a permissive role; maintain prostatic epithelium transformed by unknown carcinogens
