Common symptoms and signs of infection include:

  • fever, sweating and rash; night sweats; rigors
  • anorexia, weight loss
  • lethargy and malaise
  • lymphadenopathy
  • dizziness, postural hypotension and sinus tachycardia
  • sometimes tachypnoea
  • viral headache and occasionally meningitis
  • arthralgia or myalgia

Less common general symptoms and signs include:

  • acute delirium
  • febrile convulsions
  • septicaemic shock
  • hepatosplenomegaly
