There is a very long list of conditions which can result in self-mutilation; many conditions which cause mental handicap can result in this sort of behaviour. However, there are some specific conditions which are particularly associated with self-mutilation, including:

  • Lesch-Nyhan syndrome
  • congenital sensory neuropathy
  • leprosy
  • lead poisoning
  • Riley-Day syndrome
