Ventricular fibrillation

Authoring team

This occurs when the ventricular muscle fibres contract independently; no QRS complex can be identified and the ECG is totally disorganised.

The treatment of choice is defibrillation; nothing will bring the heart out of fibrillation except defibrillation.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation will keep the heart in ventricular fibrillation longer.
