Secondary short stature may be caused by chronic disease or hormonal conditions. These include:

Chronic disease may include:

  • undernutrition
  • chronic bowel disease
  • chronic renal disease
  • cardiac disease, in particular cyanotic disease
  • deprivational psychological dwarfism, as a result of abuse

Endocrine disease may include:

  • growth hormone deficiency
  • hypothyroidism
  • gonadal dysgenesis
  • pseudohypoparathyroidism
  • premature epiphyseal fusion
