Mechanical causes of obstruction in the bowel wall include both congenital and acquired factors:

Congenital:

  • atresia, stenosis of the gut
  • Meckel's diverticulum
  • imperforate anus
  • duplication

Acquired:

  • traumatic - haematoma, stricture
  • inflammatory - ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, acute diverticulitis
  • neoplastic
  • miscellaneous - radiation, potassium-induced stricture, endometriosis in females
