Further classification of the cytochrome P450 system

  • the isoenzymes in the cytochrome P450 system are further classified according to the similarity of the amino acid structure
    • if there is >40% sequence similarity then the enzymes are grouped in a family denoted by CYP (CYtochrome P450) and a number e.g. CYP 1
    • if there is > 55% sequence similarity then the subfamily is grouped in a sub-group identified by a capital letter e.g. CYP 1A
    • if an individual isoenzyme has been identified then it is given a further number e.g. CYP 1A2
