The pathological features of septic arthritis include:

  • acute inflammation, thickened, congested and oedematous synovium with fibrinopurulent exudate
  • the synovial fluid has very high levels of polymorphs
  • the articular cartilage is destroyed and with healing fibrous or bony ankylosis results
