There are many theories to explain the pathogenesis of non-ulcer dyspepsia:

  • excess acid secretion causes gastric and duodenal irritation and inflammation without ulceration

  • motor disturbances:
    • idiopathic gastroparesis
    • small-bowel dysmotility
    • gastro-oesophageal reflux

  • psychiatric causes:
    • depression
    • anxiety
    • somatization

  • augmented visceral perception

  • food intolerance
