Phosphoglucomutase is an enzyme that converts glucose-1-phosphate into glucose-6-phosphate. It is has an important role in preparing glycogen and fructose derivatives for glycolysis or release into the bloodstream.
Alternatively, the reverse reaction may be favoured in skeletal muscle and the liver as an intermediate stage in glycogenesis.
