At birth, the external genitalia are female while the internal genitalia have a Wolffian (male) configuration. There is an association with congenital inguinal hernias.
During puberty, testosterone-sensitive tissues respond normally, while dihydrotestosterone-sensitive tissues remain relatively atrophic:
