There are four main routes for lymphatic drainage of the skin of the breast:

  • laterally: to the anterior axillary nodes
  • medially:
    • to the internal thoracic nodes
    • to the cutaneous nodes of the contralateral breast
  • superiorly:
    • to the apical axillary nodes
    • to the medial axillary nodes
  • inferiorly:
    • to the cutaneous lymphatics of the superior abdominal wall
    • to the liver
