The following should be considered before discharging patients from day surgery:

  • no acute surgical complications
  • no excessive pain
  • patient awake and orientated
  • recovery room staff happy about discharge
  • vital signs stable
  • patient able to take fluids well
  • leave with a responsible adult
  • understand limitations of activity post-anaesthesia
  • patient passing urine
