An acute hypopituitary crisis and coma may be precipitated in two ways:

  • a patient with chronic pituitary failure may become comatose following an acute medical insult such as:
    • infection
    • trauma or surgery
    • sedatives
    • hypothermia

  • a previously healthy patient may suffer an acute insult to the pituitary gland:
    • trauma or surgery
    • haemorrhage, notably post-partum
