Misoprostol is an ester of prostaglandin E1. It acts by binding to prostaglandin receptors on the parietal cells resulting in:

  • reduction of gastric acid production
  • increase in gastric mucus production
  • increase in mucosal blood flow
  • increase in duodenal bicarbonate secretion
