Piperazine compounds

Authoring team

Piperazine compounds are more potent phenothiazines than chlorpromazine with less marked sedative and autonomic effects, but more intense extrapyramidal side effects.

They are used particularly for withdrawn, apathetic schizophrenic patients and for the treatment of paranoid, or other schizophrenic syndromes where chlorpromazine would be too sedating.

Trifluoperazine and fluphenazine decanoate are the most important.
