There are a number of features of the CSF which can help in the diagnosis of the type of meningitis, including:

  • pressure
  • appearance
  • predominant cells
  • glucose levels
  • protein levels
  • organisms seen

It is important to interpret these in the context of the clinical diagnosis and the possible prior treatment with antibiotics.
