Possible causes of rapid-onset unilateral blindness include:

  • retinal artery embolism
  • retinal vein thrombosis
  • vitreous haemorrhage
  • temporal arteritis
  • retinal detachment
  • optic neuritis
  • migraine
  • acute glaucoma

Sudden loss of vision is an ophthalmological emergency and requires immediate referral to the eye emergency department.
