Immunologically there is a depression in C3 levels, reflected in the C3 and IgG deposition seen in immunofluorescence.

A renal biopsy is not normally performed, but if it is, then under the light microscope glomerular hypercellularity and enlargement is seen, together with proliferation and infiltration of white cells. The basement membrane is swollen.

With the electron microscope there are electron dense deposits in subepithelium and subendothelium, and polymorphs can be seen.
