Fluphenazine is most often used as its long acting esters Fluphenazine enanthate or the decanoate (Modecate) which can be given by i.m. injection.

These are employed as maintenance treatment for schizophrenic patients. There are often marked extrapyramidal side effects so that an antiparkinsonian drug may be necessary.

Fluphenazine decanoate is being used increasingly for the treatment of schizophrenia after the intial acute phase has been controlled with a short acting preparation.
