Control of Q fever is usually by immunisation of susceptible persons with vaccines derived from phase I C. burnetti antigens. The vaccine must only be administered to persons who are skin test negative in order to avoid side effects.

Milk from infected cattle must be pasteurised or boiled. Exposure to infected aerosols must be avoided.
