This is thickening and calcification of the tympanic membrane. The process starts as hyaline degeneration which is then followed by calcification.

Following grommet insertion, horse shoe shaped chalky rings of tympanosclerosis may develop. Hearing loss is rare if this process is confined to the the tympanic membrane.
