In diverticular disease, the bowel is thickened, rigid and irregularly contracted. The diverticula never penetrate the taenia and are usually situated on the side wall between the mesenteric taenia and the two antimesenteric taenia. However, they may also arise on the antimesenteric intertaenial area.
The muscle of the bowel wall may be hypertrophied to such a degree that it seems that new growths exist - Grasser's tumour.
