The size of the omphalocoele varies from 2cm upwards. The hernial sac is composed of an outer layer of amnion and an inner layer of peritoneum; the contents may include only bowel but often the liver and the entire gastrointestinal tract are present. The extra-abdominal location of the viscera in utero leads to a small abdominal cavity.
Malrotation is almost inevitable.
